Living As Exiles: 1 & 2 Peter

Why Follow A Reading Plan?

Reading the Bible on our own can be intimidating.  How do we know we're doing it right?  What if we are misinterpreting what it says?  Below we are providing some questions to ask while you read that will help you be confident that you are hearing from God.

But before we offer some practical help, let's remind ourselves of some encouraging truth!  First, God wants his Word to affect our lives for the better.  Psalm 1 says "Blessed is the man... [whose] delight is in the law of the Lord, and on his law he meditates day and night.  He is like a tree planted by streams of water that yields its fruit in its season, and its leaf does not wither.  In all that he does, he prospers."  That is what our Heavenly Father wants for us - He wants us to flourish as we read His word, both for our benefit and for His glory!  Second, if we have put our trust in Jesus, then He has sent us the Holy Spirit.  That means that we aren't alone in our study of Scripture.  1 Corinthians 2 admits that "no one comprehends the thoughts of God except the Spirit of God.  Now we have received not the spirit of the world, but the Spirit who is from God, that we might understand the things freely given us by God."  We are not alone!  We have the great Helper with us!

S.O.A.P. METHOD

Scripture - Pick a verse or two that stood out to you and write it in your journal.  Be looking for a “Holy Spirit Highlight.”  What did you read and think “I needed to hear that” or felt like it was written just for you?

Observation - Now write some observations about the verse(s) or passage. What is this passage or verse saying? About God? About people? How is Jesus revealed in these verses?

Application - Now write a few sentences on how this passage applies to your life. Is there truth about God that you are to believe? A promise to receive? Is the Holy Spirit convicting you of something you need to do or stop doing in light of God’s truth?

Prayer - Now write out a prayer to God in response to this Scripture. This is a way to turn God’s Word to you back to Him. Be honest and express your heart to Him. God always listens and He delights in your prayers. (Psalm 34:15; Proverbs 15:8)

Reflection Questions

Reminded of the love of our Father and the divine help of the Spirit, let's get practical!  The first practical thing you can do is pray before you start reading at all!  Praise God for giving us His word and ask for the ability to hear from the Spirit clearly.  Then, as you read, ask four questions that will help you understand what the text means.

  1. To know what a Scripture means you have to first know what it meant.  What did this text mean to the people at the time it was said or written?
  2. Compare what their world would have been like to what our world is like.  How is their situation different from ours?
  3. Keeping in mind the differences, think about what is true no matter what.  Are there any teachings/principles that are true regardless of the situation or time period?
  4. Remember all of the Bible is divinely inspired, so you can use something that is clear somewhere else in the Bible to help you interpret what you are reading. Does my interpretation of this text agree with the rest of scripture?
  5. Jesus said at the end of the Sermon on the Mount that it's worthless to listen without applying what we've heard.  How would our thoughts/actions be different if we applied this text in our lives?
