Reading For Tuesday | Luke 14 | Luke 5:17-25

In Luke 14:28–33, Jesus speaks about the cost of discipleship. This passage follows the story of Jesus healing a sick man at the house of a Pharisee on the Sabbath. Jesus was under intense scrutiny from the “religious” people of His day because He went out of His way to interact with those who were traditionally ostracized, especially by pious Jews.

There was a cost to Jesus’ compassion for the poor, the hurting, and the outcast—it eventually cost Him His life.

The four friends in Luke 5 understood this cost and deemed it worth the effort to bring their friend to Jesus—the healer who cared for the broken.

JOURNALING & REFLECTION

REFLECT:
Reflect on the sacrifices you might need to make to prioritize reaching the lost. Consider how you can give up something lesser for something greater, just as the friends did. What might you need to be willing to sacrifice in order to bring others to Jesus? Could it be your comfort, your reputation, or even a relationship with someone who might disagree with you?

  • How does understanding the cost of discipleship change your perspective on missions?
  • Write down any fears or hesitations you have about these sacrifices, and pray for God’s guidance as you surrender them to Him.

PRAYER PROMPT

Pray for the willingness to embrace these sacrifices, knowing that they are part of being with Jesus, becoming like Him, and doing the things He did.

“Lord, open my eyes to those who need Your love today. Give me the boldness to reach out, even when it’s uncomfortable or costly. Remind me that nothing I give up compares to the joy of seeing others come to know You..”
