LISTEN

TUESDAY, APRIL 6

READING: 2 TIMOTHY 4:2-5

Yesterday we reflected on TRUTH — and how Jesus is the only truth!

Today, we read Paul’s letter to Timothy where he warns Timothy of the temptation to listen to one’s own desire rather than the truth.

“They will gather around them a great number of teachers to say what their itching ears want to hear.” (2 Timothy 4:3-4, NLT)

It happened in the early century, AND it is happening now! It is often more convenient and favorable to listen to things you agree with, that you want to be true, and that reinforces what you feel or believe. But what if those things are not sound doctrine, what if they sound like Jesus’ teaching, but in fact they are lies?

JOURNALING QUESTIONS

Spend time praying - “Lord, reveal to me ‘the lies that I like’ and how your truth unravels those lies.”

Journal and process the following questions:

  • Do I surround myself with “teachers saying what my itching ears want to hear,” or am I surrounded by people who will lovingly and graciously speak Jesus’ truth into my life even when it is uncomfortable?
  • Am I a person who speaks truth into others’ lives? Or am I speaking what they would like to hear?
  • Is there a lie that I am comfortable believing because it is easier?
