WELL DONE

Servanthood language is important in Scripture.  Faithful followers of Jesus are told to look forward to being greeted with a “well done my good and faithful servant” at the end of our lives on Earth. However, there are also instances where we are instructed to differentiate between servant and child language.

Moses is presented as a great servant of God.  Jesus is God’s Son.  Jesus takes this a step further and applies that same distinction to us.  We are “adopted sons and daughters” and this gives him great pleasure.  So we are simultaneously both servants and children.  This is also why the law of God can be understood differently through the lens of Jesus. We should not see ourselves only as servants following orders, but as children whose identities have been transformed through adoption into Sons and Daughters of the King of Kings.

As children of the Father we are now compelled to live lives worthy of that calling.  We are to become the people that Jesus already sees us as.  The law doesn’t transform us, grace does that.

JOURNALING QUESTIONS | TRANSFORMED BY GRACE

  1. Are there areas of your life that you have not let the law of Christ transform?
  2. Do you view yourself primarily as a servant of God or a child of God? What do you think the difference is in how you live?
