YOU'RE NOT ALONE AT THE GATE

THURSDAY, MARCH 27

READING: JOHN 10:1-16

IT'S NOT ALL RIDING ON YOU

We’ve spent this week unpacking Jesus’ words about the narrow and wide gates leading to two diverging paths. And if we’re not careful it could start to feel like there’s a lot riding on our ability to make good decisions or do the right thing. But today we want to revisit this idea through the lens of another passage where Jesus gives us a different perspective.

To do that, we’re going to use a practice called Lectio Divina or ‘divine reading’ of Scripture. Earlier this week we reflected on Psalm 1 which says that those who meditate on God’s Word will be blessed, so let’s welcome God’s blessing by inviting Him to speak to us through His Word.

LECTIO DIVINA PRAYER PRACTICE

We’re going to walk through four simple steps (from Soul Shepherding’s How to do Lectio Divina):

  • Read. In Lectio Divina, to read the Word of God is to approach it like food for your soul. Slowly, read John 10:1-16. If it’s helpful, listen to the passage. Pause on any portions you feel drawn to.
  • Meditate. To meditate on Scripture is like chewing your food. You reflect and ponder its deeper meaning. Gently repeat to yourself any phrase from the passage that stood out to you, turning it over in your thoughts and feelings. We’ve been reflecting this week on the narrow gate. What does Jesus want you to see anew today about the gate in light of this passage? Wait on the Holy Spirit to renew your mind (Romans 12:2) and help you hear what He may want to say to you.
  • Pray. Praying Scripture is like tasting your food. You respond to the words with feelings, confession or requests of God for what you or others need. Talk to Him about what you’re thinking and feeling.
  • Contemplate. To contemplate God's word is to digest its goodness. Rest quietly in God’s loving presence. He’s here with you. No words are necessary at this point. Simply Be with Jesus. Consider reflecting again on the image of Jesus we started with this week, arm outstretched and hand open to you.
