ON WHAT DOES YOUR HEART RELY?

FRIDAY, MARCH 7
READING: 6:19-21
IS THAT "THING" JESUS?
When Jesus says, "You can't serve God and money," it's easy to think He’s only talking about greed or the love of wealth. But the warning goes much deeper than that. It’s not just about having money—it’s about relying on it for your sense of security, your peace of mind, or your status. How often do we look at our finances to give us a feeling of control or comfort, thinking that if we just had enough, everything would be okay? But as we’ll see in the coming verses (Matthew 6:25-34), Jesus invites us to question that reliance. He reminds us that our security doesn’t come from what we own or how much we have, but from God who provides for us, cares for us, and knows our needs. This is a call to re-evaluate where we place our trust and to recognize that true peace doesn’t come from our bank accounts, but from trusting in God’s provision.
"Where your treasure is, there your heart will be also" (Matthew 6:21). Think about that for a minute. The things we treasure are the things we worry about the most—they’re what we plan for, what we try to protect, what we’re desperate to see succeed. They consume our thoughts and energy. So here’s the hard question: is the thing we treasure most truly, honestly, Jesus?

REFLECTION
Take some time to pray, honestly reflect, and journal on the following questions:
- What are some areas of my life where I might be relying on money or possessions for security, peace of mind, or status?
- Prayer Point: "Lord, show me how to store up treasures in heaven rather than on earth. Help me to invest in what lasts—relationships, acts of love, and advancing Your kingdom—rather than in temporary things."
- How do I feel when I think about not having control over my finances or material things?
- Prayer Point: "Lord, I admit that I sometimes rely on financial security to feel at ease. Teach me to release my grip on control and trust that You will provide for all my needs, just as You care for the birds of the air and the lilies of the field” (Matt. 6:26).
- How can I remind myself daily that God is my true provider, and not the things I own or the money I accumulate?
- Prayer Point: "Father, remind me daily that true peace comes from trusting in Your provision, not in what I own or what I achieve. Fill me with Your peace that surpasses understanding as I let go of my need for control."
