Good Work - Launch Week 02

WELCOME

Welcome to Week 2 of the Good Work Reading Plan! This reading plan is designed to partner with Compassion Christian Church’s sermon series of the same name, which you can find information about right here.

What’s the first question you ask people when you’re meeting them for the first time? Right after their name it’s “What do you do?”, right? If it’s not right after it’s definitely in the top three. Why? Because whatever it is that we ‘do’ takes up a lot of our time. It’s defining in so many ways. It occupies our resources, our thoughts, our talents. For many of us it becomes core to who we are and how we perceive ourselves and our place in the world (positively or negatively). Maybe you love your work or maybe you loathe it, but whatever the feeling, there it is. Whether your work consists of being a stay at home parent, business professional, skilled trade worker, creative, student or maybe it just pays the bills…we all labor at something. And yet, so often there’s a disconnect between our work and our spiritual life. For some reason we often go about our days as if this huge piece of our lived experience is somehow devoid of spiritual meaning or relevance to our relationship with Jesus. Scripture would disagree. It turns out God has a lot to say about our work, and there’s an invitation awaiting us to see our work the way He does.

Before We Start
For a deeper dive into the Biblical narrative around work and vocation, consider investing some time in listening to a two part series of the Bible Project’s podcast in which Tim Mackie suggests that work is not a curse but actually one of the greatest gifts that God has given to humans.
