Celebrating 40 Years - Launch Week 01

WELCOME

Welcome to Compassion Christian Church’s Reading Plan! Typically our plans go along with the sermon series our church is covering. Yet this week we asked Cam Huxford to share his favorite passages with us. Over the last few weeks, our church has been celebrating the work God has done through Cam over the last 40 years in Savannah at Compassion Christian. If you missed his final message as senior pastor you are able find it right here.

Before We Start
A lot can change in a couple of years. Just think over the last ten years and all that happened in your life? For me - I graduated college. I got married. I have moved a handful of times. I have started new jobs. That is a lot of change, excitement, and even grief in just a decade. That list does not even touch all that happened in our world over the last ten years.

Now, let's take a moment to think about all that has occurred in our world over the last 40 years. Think about things from your life, but also in our nation and our culture. Some big moments that came to mind:
  • The US has had seven different Presidents in the last 40 years.
  • Forrest Gump, Back to the Future, both Top Guns, and many more hit movies made their way to the big screen.
  • The World Wide Web, Social Media, and Iphones are just a few of the ways technology has taken over.
  • The Gulf Wars, 9/11, and Space Shuttle accidents have all taken place in the last few decades.
  • Bruce Springsteen, Celine Dion, multiple boy bands, and Taylor Swift are just some of the musical highlights from over the years.
  • The Georgia Bulldogs and Clemson Tigers both have had three national football championships in the last couple decades.

The last 40 years has seen many great events and many devastings events. Yet one constant in the world is that God is in control and over all things. One event that occurred 40 years ago was that Cam and Sarah Huxford answered God’s call to move to Savannah, Georgia and to make His name known in the lowcountry. Through Jesus, the Huxford’s have loved and grown a small church on Tibet Avenue into a multi-site church that expands seven campuses in multiple counties over two states, a thriving online community, and global partners around the world. Not to mention the multi-generational family impacts that have been sown throughout those years.

The mission of Compassion Christian Church is that we exist to lead people to a life-changing relationship with Jesus. There are thousands of us, who are able to say our lives have been changed, because of our relationship with Jesus that was found here at Compassion. Thank you, Cam and Sarah’s for the commitment to answer the call placed on your family over 40 years ago.

If you would like to hear more about Cam’s journey over the last 40 years, check out the interview between him and Harrison here.

Read
Genesis 1

Highlight
Genesis 1 is a beautiful telling of our God’s creativity and how He created humans to bear His image. While it would be nice to have answers to some of the questions like, “how long were each of those days?” or “how did God create everything by just “speaking”?” that skeptics might ask. The author does not answer those questions, his focus is simple on the fact that God created everything. He is the ultimate creator and ultimately the one in control of all things. By speaking briefly on creation - three chapters - the audience’s focus is supposed to be drawn to the larger narrative of Genesis. Which is the beginning of God’s chosen people - the Jewish nation, with Abraham and his family. Genesis is the story of the beginning of a people, not just the beginning of creation.

Reflection & Prayer
For this reading plan we will be using a tool to guide our study of Scripture that’s called the S.O.A.P. Method.  It stands for Scripture, Observation, Application, and Prayer.  We recommend you use a journal with this method and write out your thoughts on each of these areas for each day of reading.  It doesn’t have to be long-winded and you don’t need a fancy journal.  But for anyone that has not journaled before, the benefit is that it often helps us focus and avoid distractions during prayer and Bible study.

S.O.A.P. Method

Scripture - Pick a verse or two that stood out to you and write it in your journal. Be looking for a “Holy Spirit Highlight.” What did you read and think “I needed to hear that” or felt like it was written just for you?

Observation - Now write some observations about the verse(s) or passage. What is this passage or verse saying about God? About people? How is Jesus revealed in these verses?

Application - Now write a few sentences on how this passage applies to your life. Is there truth about God that you are to believe? Is the Holy Spirit convicting you of something you need to do or stop doing in light of God’s truth? Who could you share this story with and how God is speaking to you about it this week?

Prayer - Now write out a prayer to God in response to this Scripture. Be honest and express your heart to Him. God always listens and He delights in your prayers (Psalm 34:15; Proverbs 15:8).
