Influencers - Day 14

Day 14, Thursday, August 31
Read 1 Corinthians 10:23-33

Highlight
Verse 31 is a major verse in this long line of reasoning that Paul has been making: “So whether you eat or  drink or whatever you do, do it all for the glory of God.”  Other translations add a “therefore” with the “so” at the beginning of this verse, which is a literal translation of the original Greek.  Both words, “so” and “therefore” should trigger our minds when we are reading Scripture.  A good question to ask is “What is the ‘therefore’ there for?”  In this particular case, this phrase helps us realize that Paul is summarizing his main idea from the last three chapters that combines both the freedom and high calling of Jesus.  This is how Paul has chosen to draw this conversation to a close.

As a general principle, believers should do everything “for the glory of God,” including things as simple as eating and drinking.  To do something for the glory of God means to reflect God’s glory in the way we live.  When others look at us and how we live our lives, they should be able to see that the standards we live by are different from those of the pagan world around us.  They should be able to see Jesus living in us.  And according to Paul, there is no aspect of our lives that should escape this filter: everything done for the glory of God.

S.O.A.P. Method

Scripture - Pick a verse or two that stood out to you and write it in your journal.  Be looking for a “Holy Spirit Highlight.”  What did you read and think “I needed to hear that” or felt like it was written just for you?

Observation - Now write some observations about the verse(s) or passage. What is this passage or verse saying? About God? About people? How is Jesus revealed in these verses?

Application - Now write a few sentences on how this passage applies to your life. Is there truth about God that you are to believe? A promise to receive? Is the Holy Spirit convicting you of something you need to do or stop doing in light of God’s truth?

Prayer - Now write out a prayer to God in response to this Scripture. This is a way to turn God’s Word to you back to Him. Be honest and express your heart to Him. God always listens and He delights in your prayers. (Psalm 34:15; Proverbs 15:8)
