Influencers - Day 13

Day 13 - Wednesday, August 30
Read 1 Corinthians 10:1-22

Highlight
Verse 13 is a verse that has brought comfort and reassurance to Christians from the time this letter was delivered until now.  The word translated as “temptation” is peirasmos and it covers both the concept of a temptation and a trial.  Paul, both through the word he uses and the references to ancient Israel, is referring to everything from persecution to anything that might tempt us to give up on the faith.  We should realize that Paul is fully aware that if the Corinthians distanced themselves from the idolatry around them that they would certainly experience social isolation and persecution.  Paul is preparing them for this in advance.

In another letter Paul wrote, “But the Lord is faithful, and he will strengthen and protect you from the evil one.” (2 Thessalonians 3:3)  The Lord will indeed give us the strength by his grace to bear up under any peirasmos that we experience, if only we depend on his strength.  For we can be confident that he will eventually provide for us a way out, so that while we are still under the peirasmos we can endure it.

S.O.A.P. Method

Scripture - Pick a verse or two that stood out to you and write it in your journal.  Be looking for a “Holy Spirit Highlight.”  What did you read and think “I needed to hear that” or felt like it was written just for you?

Observation - Now write some observations about the verse(s) or passage. What is this passage or verse saying? About God? About people? How is Jesus revealed in these verses?

Application - Now write a few sentences on how this passage applies to your life. Is there truth about God that you are to believe? A promise to receive? Is the Holy Spirit convicting you of something you need to do or stop doing in light of God’s truth?

Prayer - Now write out a prayer to God in response to this Scripture. This is a way to turn God’s Word to you back to Him. Be honest and express your heart to Him. God always listens and He delights in your prayers. (Psalm 34:15; Proverbs 15:8)
