Influencers - Day 04

Day 04 - Thursday, August 17
Read 1 Corinthians 3

Highlight
Verse 5 uses very interesting language.  Paul does not ask “WHO is Apollos/Paul?”  He asks instead, “WHAT is Apollos/Paul?”  It’s a different word in Greek and through it Paul is not talking about their ultimate identity, but rather what their function is within the church.  They are servants (diakonos), a word that emphasizes the voluntary service that one renders for another person or persons.  The ultimate diakonos, of course, was Jesus, who Did not come to be served, but to serve (diakoneo), and give his life as a ransom for many.”  Mark 10:45

Paul is again emphasizing what unites followers of Jesus and the folly of connecting ourselves to any one person other than Jesus.  In fact, Paul closes this chapter by pointing out what is even the purpose of his own service - to help the Corinthians see what riches they have in Jesus!  Paul, and all human church leaders, are there to serve the people and their goal is the same: to make sure that believers see the abundant riches they have in Christ.  “All things are yours…” (v22)  …not only the people who serve you in the church, but far more because of the generosity of our Lord and Savior.

S.O.A.P. Method

Scripture - Pick a verse or two that stood out to you and write it in your journal.  Be looking for a “Holy Spirit Highlight.”  What did you read and think “I needed to hear that” or felt like it was written just for you?

Observation - Now write some observations about the verse(s) or passage. What is this passage or verse saying? About God? About people? How is Jesus revealed in these verses?

Application - Now write a few sentences on how this passage applies to your life. Is there truth about God that you are to believe? A promise to receive? Is the Holy Spirit convicting you of something you need to do or stop doing in light of God’s truth?

Prayer - Now write out a prayer to God in response to this Scripture. This is a way to turn God’s Word to you back to Him. Be honest and express your heart to Him. God always listens and He delights in your prayers. (Psalm 34:15; Proverbs 15:8)
