Influencers - Day 02

Day 02: Tuesday, August 15
Read 1 Corinthians 1

Highlight
In verses 10 & 11 we get a reminder of what this Book of the Bible is: it’s a letter written by Paul in response to things he’s heard are causing problems within the Corinthian Church.  We don’t know exactly what Paul has heard, but through the letter we will see Paul address multiple things in the church that reflect a worldly perspective that is threatening the health of the church and the advancement of the Gospel.  The first issue is a major theme in many of Paul’s letters: division in the church.

Verse 13 is a series of rhetorical questions.  In the original Greek, the questions begin with the word , which implies that the expected answer is not simply a “no,” but rather “of course not!”  Paul is highlighting the absurdity of creating a hierarchy or feeling proud because of their connection with any human when what is truly shared is a connection with God Himself.  It is the beauty of the Gospel of Jesus that our hope, our identity, our status, our confidence, etc is rooted in Jesus rather than anything of human origin.  Because even the best of us fall short and eventually disappoint, but not so with Jesus.  He does not change and he does not fail.  This is why the only wise thing to boast about is Jesus alone.

S.O.A.P. Method

Scripture - Pick a verse or two that stood out to you and write it in your journal.  Be looking for a “Holy Spirit Highlight.”  What did you read and think “I needed to hear that” or felt like it was written just for you?

Observation - Now write some observations about the verse(s) or passage. What is this passage or verse saying? About God? About people? How is Jesus revealed in these verses?

Application - Now write a few sentences on how this passage applies to your life. Is there truth about God that you are to believe? A promise to receive? Is the Holy Spirit convicting you of something you need to do or stop doing in light of God’s truth?

Prayer - Now write out a prayer to God in response to this Scripture. This is a way to turn God’s Word to you back to Him. Be honest and express your heart to Him. God always listens and He delights in your prayers. (Psalm 34:15; Proverbs 15:8)
