Easter Week Launch

Welcome
Welcome to Week 2 of the Easter Reading Plan!  This reading plan is designed to partner with Compassion Christian Church’s Easter sermon series which can be found here HERE.  This reading plan will support this series by walking us through the final days of Jesus’ life, his death on the cross, his resurrection from the dead and his ascension to Heaven.

The focus of this season is on the resurrection of Jesus.  Peter, a follower of Jesus who was present for his ministry, his death, and his resurrection, said this: “All praise to God, the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ.  It is by his great mercy that we have been born again, because God raised Jesus Christ from the dead.  Now we live with great expectation, and we have a priceless inheritance - an inheritance that is kept in heaven for you, pure and undefiled, beyond the reach of change and decay.”  1 Peter 1:3-4

Because Jesus defeated death, we can be made new.  We can have hope.  We can trust that we also will be beyond the power of change and decay.  May the truth of these things help you engage with this plan with wonder and joy!

Before We Start
There is very little detail given in the Gospel accounts about the events that took place in the days between Christ’s death and resurrection. What’s clear based upon the reaction of the disciples after his resurrection is that they were not anticipating his return. Even though Jesus himself warned them about what was to come (Luke 13:33; Matthew 16:21; Matthew 17:22; Mark 8:31), it must have been understandably difficult to hold out hope after what they had witnessed. This week we’ll pick up in the story where we left off in Luke, but in the Gospel of Matthew to review the events of Jesus’ crucifixion and those leading up to his resurrection. We can see ourselves in many of the characters surrounding Christ’s death: the mockers, the witnesses, the mourners and the fearful. As we do, we should together reflect on the darkness in which we also once walked before we understood and believed for ourselves what Christ had done for us.
