Passion - Day 05

Day 05: Friday, March 31
Read Luke 22:66-71; Luke 23:1-25 - Jesus’ Trial

Highlight
There are many people that we encounter on Jesus’ path to the cross.  We can imagine ourselves celebrating Jesus as he enters Jerusalem riding on a donkey, or as one of the disciples invited to join Jesus in the garden, or even as one of the disciples attempting to defend him from the mob.  But if we want to find ourselves in the story, we need look no further than Barabbas.

He seems like an interruption to the story.  But he’s actually the point of the story.  On the one hand, we have Jesus.  Falsely accused.  Even Pilate understands that Jesus doesn’t deserve to die.  On the other hand, we have an actual murderer and insurrectionist.  He absolutely deserves to die.  But Jesus is sent to the cross and Barabbas is set free.  This is the exchange that Jesus chose: Jesus was treated like Barabbas so Barabbas could be treated like Jesus.  We are Barabbas.
