Passion - Day 04

Day 04: Thursday, March 30
Read Luke 22:7-30; Luke 22:39-46 - The Last Supper and the Garden

Highlight
This supper occurs during the celebration of Passover, the holy week when Jewish people celebrate how God liberated them from slavery in Egypt and invited them into a new covenant relationship with him.  The meal has certain elements that carried meaning already, but he uses the symbols of Passover to reveal the meaning of his coming death.

The broken bread was his broken body that he would give up for his people.  And the wine represented the blood that would establish a new covenant between God and his people.  A new relationship that would be based on grace and forgiveness and sealed by the giving of the Holy Spirit.  Like the lamb sacrificed to save the Israelites in Exodus 12, Jesus would be sacrificed to save his people.  The lamb’s blood saved them, Jesus’ blood would save us.

In his prayer, Jesus mentions a “cup” being taken from him.  This is imagery from the Old Testament, where God’s wrath against sin was described as being in a cup that would be poured out on those who deserved punishment.  Jesus is in anguish as he imagines tasting the wrath of His Father, someone he has enjoyed a perfect relationship with since before time itself.  When we drink the cup of communion, we celebrate our perfect relationship with God.  But we can only drink his cup of celebration because Jesus drank our cup of wrath.
