Passion - Day 03

Day 03: Wednesday, March 29
Read Luke 22:1-6; Luke 22:47-53 - The Betrayal

Highlight
This begins the true sorrow of the coming suffering of Jesus: his betrayal was at the hands of one of his Twelve followers.  But Luke makes it clear that the enemy, Satan, was ultimately behind this.  Back in Chapter 4, Luke said that following the temptation of Jesus, Satan left him “until an opportune time.”  This is that time, a time that God is allowing “the power of darkness to reign.”

Verse 47-53 communicate the pain of betrayal.  Not only do we hear it in Jesus pointing out the irony of a betrayal through an act of intimacy (Judas’ kiss), but there are subtle indications too.  Luke calls him “the man who was called Judas.”  This was a dramatic way of isolating Judas, putting him aside with a derogatory comment - “this Judas person.”

Fundamentally, here we have another example of the beautiful thing we have in Jesus: a Savior that knows our pain intimately.  Jesus knows what it’s like to be betrayed.  As the author of Hebrews reminds us, “We do not have a high priest who is unable to empathize with our weaknesses…Let us then approach God’s throne of grace with confidence, so that we may receive mercy and find grace to help us in our time of need.”  Hebrews 4:15-16
