Passion - Day 01

Day 01: Monday, March 27
Read Luke 19:28-40 - The Triumphant Entry

Highlight
Jesus’ final days in Jerusalem are loaded with connections to prophecies in the Old Testament.  For centuries prophets have been predicting the arrival of a king that would save the Jewish people and restore their kingdom.  This anointed king was called the Messiah (meaning “anointed one”) or, in Greek, the Christ.  Those prophecies were a source of hope, especially during the first century when Israel was a conquered nation.  When Jesus publicly does something that matches a prophecy about the Messiah, he is making a declaration of his identity to the people around him.  The Triumphant Entry is an example of this.

A prophecy about the Messiah is found in Zechariah 9:9-10, “Rejoice greatly, Daughter Zion! Shout, Daughter Jerusalem! See, your king comes to you, righteous and victorious,
lowly and riding on a donkey, on a colt, the foal of a donkey.”  The people of Jerusalem welcome Jesus as this king, shouting out their hope and laying their cloaks out in an act of submission.  If there is any doubt, the Pharisees tell Jesus to denounce this behavior.  In other words, “You are implying that you are the Messiah and the people are agreeing!”  But Jesus refuses because he is precisely who they declare him to be: the King who comes in the name of the Lord.  The Messiah and their savior.
