The Resistance - Day 37

Day 37: Tuesday, March 21
Reading Jeremiah 12

Highlight
In the previous chapters Jeremiah records the warnings of the Lord for Israel where he lays out a significant case against his own people. Their stubborn refusal to turn away from idols and moral decay is leading them down a sure path of destruction. While the tone is clear and cutting regarding the necessary rebuke and punishment that Israel has brought upon itself, it’s also pleading. There is compassion and mercy continually extended despite what seems like a relentless commitment to not just ignore, but defy these warnings. At the end of chapter 11 Jeremiah is made aware of a plot to kill him because of his message and we find him in chapter 12, lonely and frustrated. He is convinced that continued effort to reconcile Israel is hopeless. We see in the Lord’s response both his perfect justice and mercy. He cannot deny the consequences of sin, but He also longs to extend compassion, not only to Israel, but to anyone who would call on Him. In a culture that would have us believe that the God of the Bible is intolerant, Jeremiah declares the message of the resistance: unfathomable grace.
