The Resistance - Day 36

Day 36: Monday, March 20
Reading Jeremiah 1

Highlight
It might be difficult to imagine what it would be like to hear a message like the one Jeremiah received from the Lord. We don’t know if Jeremiah heard an audible voice, but we do get to see a fascinating conversation unfold between Jeremiah and Creator of the world. Jeremiah responds like many of us would, “O Sovereign Lord…I can’t speak for you!” (1:6). Jeremiah points to his youth as his primary hindrance, but we are all tempted to give God excuses why we can’t be used to make a difference in His Kingdom. We’re too young/old, we don’t have enough Biblical knowledge, we don’t have the resources, we don’t have the influence, we don’t have the right gifts/talents…we haven’t conquered our own sins, how could we possibly call others to do so? Notice that the Lord does not give Jeremiah a pep talk. He doesn’t tell Jeremiah that he can do it because he has what it takes or because God is going to miraculously overcome the obstacles he will face. Instead, what the Lord offers is His presence. On his own Jeremiah is right believing that he can do nothing (a foreshadowing of Jesus’ words in John 15:5), but with the Lord anything is possible. And of course this is a theme we see throughout Scripture that extends to our own experience today. It seems clear that the very nature of our God is that He chooses to use His people, imperfect and weak as we may be, to partner with Him in the redemptive work of creation itself.

We Want To Hear From You
It's our hope that this reading plan has been an impactful part of this series for you and we are excited for future projects like it. To help us stay on course, take two minutes to tell us about your experience: TAKE THE SURVEY

Reflection
Every passage in the Bible, including the one you just read, is “...inspired by God and is useful to teach us what is true and to make us realize what is wrong in our lives.  It corrects us when we are wrong and teaches us to do what is right.”  Let the passage challenge you as you reflect on it, but always cling to the full context of Scripture, which tells us that “There is no condemnation for those who belong to Christ Jesus.”  Praise God!

  • What truth does this passage communicate about God?  About us?  About our world?
  • Has God used this passage to highlight something that is wrong in your life?
  • What does this passage teach us to do? What is one practical thing you can do to apply this to your life?
