The Resistance - Day 31

Day 31: Monday, March 13
Read Isaiah 40

Highlight
Isaiah was a prophet of God who preached to the Kingdom of Judah before their exile to Babylon.  Much of his book focuses on the spiritual blindness of the Jewish people and the coming consequences of their choices to follow after other gods and abandon their covenant with Yahweh.  Yet Isaiah did not only communicate doom, he also communicated a hope for the future.  And not just the return of the Jewish people from exile in Babylon, but a greater future Kingdom under the coming Messiah.

Isaiah 40 begins this hopeful transition and verses 9-11 are the key verses of transition.  The Jewish people are told to behold their God, to truly see Him and remember who He is.  These verse communicate the perfect balance of strength and tenderness.  He is mighty to save, but the spoils of his victory are not gold and treasure.  His “reward” is us, freed from captivity by his mighty arm yet gathered in those same arms tenderly to his heart.  Behold our great God - he uses all of his great might on behalf of those he loves.

More to See
The calling Peter is portrayed in The Chosen, an excellent show that portrays Jesus’ life.  The scene is found in Season 1, Episode 4.  While the whole show is worth your investment, if you want to find the specific scene you can skip to 35:30 into the episode.

Reflection
Every passage in the Bible, including the one you just read, is “...inspired by God and is useful to teach us what is true and to make us realize what is wrong in our lives.  It corrects us when we are wrong and teaches us to do what is right.”  Let the passage challenge you as you reflect on it, but always cling to the full context of Scripture, which tells us that “There is no condemnation for those who belong to Christ Jesus.”  Praise God!

  • What truth does this passage communicate about God?  About us?  About our world?
