The Resistance - Day 28

Day 28: Wednesday, March 08
Read Luke 7:36-50

Highlight
Luke doesn’t specify what sin the woman is engaged in specifically, but in other areas of his gospel the term is used for someone who has a reputation for gross immorality.  Culturally, her unbound hair would imply that she was a prostitute but that is not definitive.  Whatever her life choices, they were public enough that Simon the Pharisee knew her and judged her sin to be severe.

Jesus’ pronouncement of her salvation is in the perfect tense, expressing that it is an accomplished fact.  As we have studied thus far this week, all sins are ultimately against God and therefore only God can ultimately pardon someone from their sins.  To those present for this event, there would be no confusion about what Jesus had just claimed: He was claiming divine authority.  He was claiming to be God.

Reflection
Every passage in the Bible, including the one you just read, is “...inspired by God and is useful to teach us what is true and to make us realize what is wrong in our lives.  It corrects us when we are wrong and teaches us to do what is right.”  Let the passage challenge you as you reflect on it, but always cling to the full context of Scripture, which tells us that “There is no condemnation for those who belong to Christ Jesus.”  Praise God!

  • What truth does this passage communicate about God?  About us?  About our world?
  • Has God used this passage to highlight something that is wrong in your life?
