The Resistance - Day 27

Day 27: Tuesday, March 07
Read Psalm 51

Highlight
King David wrote these words to reflect his guilt and need for forgiveness after committing adultery with Bathsheba.  The full story can be found in 2 Samuel 11:1-12:25.  One of the key verses in this Psalm is David’s statement that his sin was against God and God alone (v.4).  Remember that this poetry and David is expressing a realization with extreme language - though he had sinned against both Uriah and Bathsheba, in a very real sense all sin is ultimately against God.  He is completely good and sin is an affront to his goodness, a rejection of his rule, and a failure to represent him as his image bearer.  All sin is against God, as Jesus confirms in the words of the Prodigal Son: “Father, I have sinned against heaven and before you.”  (Luke 15:18)

Also, David shows us how being forgiven can lead to our forgiveness of others.  In v. 12, David prays that he would be restored.  This is the same word that is in v.13 when David promises to help sinners “turn back to you.”  A literal translation would be that David asks God to restore his joy, and in response he will help restore others.  This is the model of forgiveness throughout the Scriptures, not just found in the teachings of Jesus.

Reflection
Every passage in the Bible, including the one you just read, is “...inspired by God and is useful to teach us what is true and to make us realize what is wrong in our lives.  It corrects us when we are wrong and teaches us to do what is right.”  Let the passage challenge you as you reflect on it, but always cling to the full context of Scripture, which tells us that “There is no condemnation for those who belong to Christ Jesus.”  Praise God!

  • What truth does this passage communicate about God?  About us?  About our world?
