The Resistance - Day 22

Day 22: Tuesday, February 28
Read Matthew 14:22-34

Highlight
Peter’s faith in Jesus is strong enough to get him out of the boat, but when he takes his eyes off of Jesus and puts them on the waves his faith doesn’t hold.  Again, the ups and downs of Peter’s discipleship.  Jesus’ gentle rebuke is a reminder for all of us.  Our doubts are often a result of taking our eyes off of Jesus and putting them on the things that are causing our fear.  But when we return our eyes to Jesus we often find ourselves wondering the same thing that Jesus asks, “Why did I ever doubt?”

Similar to the story of his calling, the story ends with Peter making the right decision: he worships Jesus.  In Judah Smith’s sermon on this passage, he praises Peter for “worshiping while he is still wet.”  Peter left the boat in triumph, he returned to the boat soaked because his faith didn’t hold.  But Peter doesn’t let that shame him.  Jesus didn’t let him sink and Jesus has not rejected him.  So he worships while he is still wet, declaring with the others that Jesus is, “...the Son of God.”

Reflection
Every passage in the Bible, including the one you just read, is “...inspired by God and is useful to teach us what is true and to make us realize what is wrong in our lives.  It corrects us when we are wrong and teaches us to do what is right.”  Let the passage challenge you as you reflect on it, but always cling to the full context of Scripture, which tells us that “There is no condemnation for those who belong to Christ Jesus.”  Praise God!
