The Resistance - Day 10

Day 10: Friday, February 10
Read 1 Kings 19

Highlight
Elijah has traveled to Mount Horeb, which is another name the Hebrews have for Mount Sinai.  Mount Sinai is the location of one of the most famous encounters between God and his people.  God descended in power there and spoke with Moses, as described in Exodus 19:18-19,  “Now Mount Sinai was wrapped in smoke because the Lord had descended on it in fire...the whole mountain trembled greatly… Moses spoke, and God answered him in thunder.”

You may notice that this description includes all of the things that happened with Elijah on the mountainside, yet God was not “in” any of these things.  Scholars believe that the meaning behind this is that Elijah, in his despair, thought he needed to be reminded of God’s power.  But instead, what he truly needed was a reminder of God’s presence.  God whispers because he is close.

Reflection
Every passage in the Bible, including the one you just read, is “...inspired by God and is useful to teach us what is true and to make us realize what is wrong in our lives.  It corrects us when we are wrong and teaches us to do what is right.”  Let the passage challenge you as you reflect on it, but always cling to the full context of Scripture, which tells us that “There is no condemnation for those who belong to Christ Jesus.”  Praise God!
