The Resistance - Day 05

Day 05: Friday, February 03
Read 1 Peter Chapter 5

Highlight
Chapter after chapter Peter has told us about the need to conduct our lives in a manner that is distinct from the world, despite the fact that such a life will lead to suffering and persecution.  It’s a hard calling, but it is not a hopeless one. Peter ends his teaching with a promise rooted in God’s grace and power. Verse 10-11: “And after you have suffered a little while, the God of all grace, who has called you to his eternal glory in Christ, will himself restore, confirm, strengthen, and establish you. To him be the dominion forever and ever. Amen.”

It is always wise to stop and reflect deeply on the promises of God.  Underline them in your Bible. Write them in a journal. We should collect them, in a sense, and put special emphasis on them. Our God is a Promise Keeper. When a promise is made in Scripture, it will happen.  This promise in 1 Peter 5:10-11 will happen. Maybe not as quickly as we would want, but God will restore, confirm, strengthen, and establish us. Hold on to that hope as you reflect not just on this chapter, but on the Book as a whole.

Reflection
Every passage in the Bible, including the one you just read, is “...inspired by God and is useful to teach us what is true and to make us realize what is wrong in our lives.  It corrects us when we are wrong and teaches us to do what is right.”  Let the passage challenge you as you reflect on it, but always cling to the full context of Scripture, which tells us that “There is no condemnation for those who belong to Christ Jesus.”  Praise God!

  • What truth does this passage communicate about God?  About us?  About our world?
