Belt of Truth

Focus of the Week:

God has given us a full set of armor to protect ourselves against sin and Satan. Yet many of us accepted the gift of salvation and stopped arming ourselves. How do we arm ourselves in truth?

Getting Ready For The Week

This week we will have a guiding post with scriptures for each day focused on the overall topic for the week. Reflection questions are set for the entire week to provide time to dive deeper into scripture each day.

Notes on the practices:

Journaling and reflection both help to slow down and be mindful of what is being read. Both are similar practices; feel free to journal reflection questions or reflect on journalling questions. These are here to be a guide, not a task. Let the Holy Spirit lead you to whatever He may want to highlight for you specifically.

Getting Started:

Last week we talked about the importance of putting on the armor of God - specifically how we all start with the helmet of salvation. But instead of continuing to embrace the Spirit's ongoing work, we leave out several protective elements God wants to equip us with. Friends, these things matter as they guard our mind, our relationships, our integrity, and our peace. This week we are looking at another indispensable part of the armor: the belt of truth. We all grew up being told to tell the truth, not to lie. It’s understandable how significant truth-telling is when we think about the relational damage it causes when we don't.

How does this relate to a belt? Think about it from a functional perspective - a belt holds everything else together. Consider what this meant for a Roman soldier; it would have secured clothing so they could move about freely without fear of catching on something or stumbling. It also provided a place to secure life-saving weaponry that could be easily drawn during battle. In a real sense, without a belt, everything else can sort of unravel and fall apart.

Let’s connect this with truth and lies. Going all the way back to the beginning, we learn that lies or not speaking truth originates with the great unraveler - Satan. (Genesis 3). Continuing throughout Scripture, we see that deceiving or pulling away from the truth is a repeated tactic of the enemy (John 8:44). Establishing the truth of who God is and what He has done as our firm foundation is the best defense against these schemes.

However, as followers of Christ, the truth does not stop with simply knowing and believing God and what He has done. We have to practice holding fast to what we have heard and speaking truth to those around us. (Colossians 3:9-10) As we've already noted, speaking truthfully is important for building and maintaining relationships with others. But speaking truth as part of the armor of God goes even further. It means speaking the Truth, that is, the Word and the Gospel, to others as well.

So we know the Truth of God, we speak truth, and we must hear truth. But this is possibly the most difficult part of equipping ourselves with truth - surrounding ourselves with fellow truth-tellers. (Proverbs 13:20) We need people who will also speak truth and the Truth into our lives. The struggle here lies in discerning the character of the person speaking and our heart's willingness to receive it. In this, we rely upon the Holy Spirit's guidance to reveal what needs to be revealed in others and ourselves.

Embracing the belt of truth is another vital step in putting on the armor of God. It becomes a cornerstone not just for ourselves, but for those to whom we speak as well. When we adhere to truth, we must remember we are striving to guard not just our ears but also our tongues.

Let this be the starting point:

Ask God to show how you might become well armed in truth by reading it, hearing it and speaking it.

Scriptures For The Week

Scripture helps us hear God and live out His truth. This week we will focus on Scripture that displays God speaking through the Holy Spirit.

Weekly Memory Verse

Read it once a day. Let it shape how you think and pray this week.
"Get the truth and never sell it; Also get wisdom, discipline, and good judgment."

Proverbs 23:23 NLT

Reflection

Reflection helps us pause, listen, and let God speak to our hearts.
  • Am I fully armored with God's provision?
  • Does God's truth extend into all areas of my life, not just when I'm at church or reading my Bible?
  • Have I neglected to listen to truth spoken to me?
  • Am I choosing to speak something untrue into someone else's life?

Ready To Begin?

You don’t have to have everything figured out.

Just take the next step.
