Getting Started This Week | How Do I Hear From God | Week 1

August 3 - August 8, 2026
Scripture
Focus of the Week:
God speaks to us. He isn’t a distant creator who set everything in motion and then took a step back. Instead, He is intimately involved and engaged, reaching out —most clearly through His living words of Scripture.

Getting Ready For The Week
This week will look a bit different. Instead of written content each day to read in addition to Scripture, we are diving deep on day one, then giving Scripture for each following day. As you do so, make space to read and hear more from God's word directly as you reflect and journal on His words.
Notes on the practices:
Journaling and reflection both help to slow down and be mindful of what is being read. Both are similar practices; feel free to journal reflection questions or reflect on journalling questions. These are here to be a guide, not a task. Let the Holy Spirit lead you to whatever He may want to highlight for you specifically.
Getting Started:
As we set out this week, let's consider the nature of conversation. Conversation is not something that's intended to be one-sided, like listening to a lecture or a monologue. It's dynamic, it's engaging, and it involves active intentional participation from both parties. That's the kind of connection that God desires to have with each of us.
We can look all the way back to Genesis to find evidence of God interacting with Adam and Eve in the Garden of Eden, speaking to them directly. Through the example of Moses in Exodus, we learn that He can choose to disclose to His people through signs, giving instruction and guidance. God also connected with the prophets, such as Isaiah, through dreams and visions, revealing His holy nature and message.
How then does God speak now? One of the ways is through His holy written Word, that is Scripture. Through the Bible, God reveals His will, character, and love. Each day this week, we'll look at different passages that speak directly to this reality and what it means for our walk with Him.
Right about now, you might be thinking, what could God possibly say to me today through ancient words written thousands of years ago? Friends, this question encapsulates a beautiful mystery of God. The living nature of Scripture means it is not dead or archaic; it is a vital force that speaks fresh perspective and applies to our circumstances. It holds the continued potential for personal healing, correction, and maturity. Truly, a single passage can pierce the surface to expose our humanity.
As you spend time in God's Word, be mindful of your role in the intentional two-way flow of communication. Lean in, make it a priority to engage His written word; be prayerful and expectant as you show up for the conversation.
Let this be the starting point:
Ask God reveal himself through His written word each day this week.

Reflection
Reflection Helps Us Pause, Listen, And Let God Speak To Our Hearts.
- How do I expect God to speak?
- Am I just checking off an item on my to-do list or really spending time with God in prayer and listening to His word? What's something I can do to strengthen this practice?
- How does the realization that scripture reveals something about the character and nature of God change the way I view the Bible?
- What is one specific, actionable next step I can take today based on my reading each day this week?

You Don’t Have To Have Everything Figured Out.
