Getting Started This Week | Prone To Wander Week 2

April 13 - April 18, 2026
Grace Before the Structure
This Week's Focus:
In Exodus 18, something important happens before the law is ever given.
Before Mount Sinai. Before the commandments. Before the structure.
Grace is already at work.
Moses is reunited with his father-in-law, Jethro, a Midianite priest, an outsider to Israel’s story. And yet, when Jethro hears what God has done, he rejoices. He praises God. He offers a sacrifice. He sits at the table with Moses and the leaders.
This moment matters.
Because it shows us that God’s grace was never limited to one group. His work was already reaching beyond Israel. Already drawing in the nations. Already inviting those who were once far off.
And it happens before the law is given.
For people who feel off track, this changes how we see everything.
Because we often assume we have to get things right before we belong. That structure comes first. That God’s acceptance is something we earn.
But Exodus 18 tells a different story.
Grace comes first.
God moves. God rescues. God reveals Himself. And people respond, not because they’ve mastered obedience, but because they’ve encountered Him.
This week, we will:
No matter how far you feel, remember this:
God’s grace meets you before your obedience ever could. You are not outside His reach.

- See that God’s grace reaches further than we expect
- Understand that belonging with God begins before we “get it right”
- Recognize that even in the wilderness, God is forming us through relationship, not just rules
No matter how far you feel, remember this:
God’s grace meets you before your obedience ever could. You are not outside His reach.
Getting Started This Week
By the time we reach Exodus 18, Israel is still in the wilderness.
They’ve been rescued, but they’re not fully formed. They’re free, but still learning how to live free. Like us, they are in that in-between space, saved but still struggling.
Prone To Wander.
And right here, before God gives them the law, He gives them something else first.
Grace.
Jethro’s arrival reminds us that God’s work has always been bigger than one people. Bigger than one moment. His grace is already drawing others in, even those who seem outside the story.
And then, through Jethro, God provides wisdom for Moses, not as a burden, but as help. Structure doesn’t come as pressure to perform, but as a gift to sustain what grace has already begun.
That’s not always how we think about it.
We tend to believe God’s primary posture toward us is correction. That He’s waiting for us to get it together. That the wilderness is proof we’re failing.
But Exodus 18 shows us something better.
God meets us in the middle of our limitations. He provides people. He gives wisdom. He creates support. Not because we’ve earned it, but because He cares for us.
Grace comes before expectation.
Even in seasons where we feel inconsistent, overwhelmed, or unsure, God is not stepping back from us. He is stepping toward us, often in ways we don’t expect.
This week, we’ll lean into that truth. We’ll begin to see that God’s work in us doesn’t start with pressure, it starts with grace. And even our growth is something He lovingly guides, not something we have to force on our own.

Reflect
Reflection helps us pause, listen, and let God speak to our hearts.
- Where are you trying to earn what God has already given you through grace?
- Do you believe God’s care for you includes support from others, or do you try to carry it alone?
- How might your view of God change if you truly believed His grace comes before His expectations?
