JESUS THE LIGHT OF THE WORLD

God often chooses stillness over spectacle. The world expects God to speak through earthquakes, fire, and attention-getting events, but as the hymn “Silent Night” reminds us, God often speaks through stillness—quietness, even whispers. (See 1 Kings 19 and the story of Elijah in the cave with God.)

The second line of the hymn, “all is calm,” becomes an invitation for us to cultivate spaces of quiet so that we can learn to recognize His presence and hear His whispers. Psalm 46:10 directs us to, “Be still, and know that I am God.”

Verse One:

Silent night, holy night,
All is calm, all is bright
Round yon virgin mother and Child.
Holy infant, so tender and mild,
Sleep in heavenly peace,
Sleep in heavenly peace.

Journaling Questions

Find a spot free from distractions and sit before the Lord in silence for 3–5 minutes. Ask Him what He might want to say to you as you reflect and open your heart to His Word.

  • Where is Jesus inviting you into calmness today? What noise in your life is drowning out His whisper?

  • “All is bright” points to Jesus, the Light of the World, entering darkness. Where do you need Christ’s light to brighten your thoughts, feelings, or current situation?

  • The stable was an ordinary place—not holy by nature—yet God’s presence made it holy. What ordinary place in your life is God making holy by His presence? Where do you need Him to make His dwelling in you more clear?

  • The “holy night” reminds us that God sanctifies ordinary circumstances. What ordinary circumstance might God be using in your life right now to remind you that He is working, moving, and redeeming? What circumstance would you like God to redirect, improve, or change? Write a prayer asking Him to intervene and redirect the situation. Then listen for His response.
