Reading For Thursday | Philippians 4 | Luke 5:17-25
Paul was a sent missionary. He could not do the work God had called him to do without the faithful support of churches like the one in Philippi, to whom he writes this letter of thanks. Not every person in the church at Philippi was called to serve in the same way Paul was, or was gifted as he was, but they all understood that the call they had received from the Lord was for all of them. They each had a vital role to play in fulfilling the mission as senders.
Prayer was key to the success of that mission. Paul’s partnership was not just with the church; together they partnered with the Holy Spirit to do the work set before them. Philippians 4:6–7 reminds us of the peace that comes from presenting our requests to God in prayer. We may be overwhelmed by the needs we see around us or by the enormity of the task we believe God has called us to, but God does not expect us to engage in this work through our own strength or power.
The faith of the four friends in Luke 5 was evident in their actions, but it was also undergirded by a deep trust in Jesus’ power to heal. Reflect on the importance of prayer in your mission efforts. Consider how you can incorporate prayer into your daily routine—specifically praying for the lost and for opportunities to share the gospel. Pray for God’s guidance and strength as you seek to bring others to Him.

JOURNALING & REFLECTION
Pause and spend some quiet time with the Lord. Reflect on the questions below and write out your thoughts and prayers as He leads you.
- How can you make prayer a central part of your mission efforts?
- What specific prayers can you offer for the lost and for those serving in missions?
- Write a prayer asking for God’s guidance and strength in your mission efforts. Consider picking up a prayer card for one of our missionaries, or printing information and specific prayer needs from our website, and committing to pray for them for a season.
PRAYER PROMPT
“Lord, thank You for inviting me to be part of Your mission. Teach me to depend on You through prayer, and give me strength and courage to share Your love with others. Amen.”
