Reading For Sunday | Malachi 3:10-11

DEVOTED | Tithing Challenge

Last week’s blog explored the biblical definitions of tithe, offering, and stewardship, as well as how to incorporate giving and worshiping God according to our spiritual temperaments.

This week, we’ll take a look at how giving can be woven into our personal Rule of Life.
Marcus spoke about what our church calls the Tithing Challenge, which comes from Malachi 3:10, where the Lord says:

“Bring the whole tithe into the storehouse, that there may be food in my house. Test me in this,” says the Lord Almighty, “and see if I will not throw open the floodgates of heaven and pour out so much blessing that there will not be room enough to store it.”

From this passage, we encourage followers of Christ to give the full tithe for at least 90 days and see how God moves. The outcome may not be exactly what you expect—things may not be instantly fixed or look like material blessings—but the Lord will show up when you give Him everything. As Marcus said in his message:

“My finances will go better with 90% and God’s hand of blessing over this money than 100% without God’s blessing.”

This challenge is ultimately about faith in God’s provision—and He always provides. When we step into that kind of trust, it leads to a more regular and obedient rhythm of giving to the Lord.

While tithing is important—and a practice God emphasizes throughout both the Old and New Testaments—giving can extend beyond 10% of your first fruits. Financially, your tithe can go beyond that baseline. It might go to your local church, to Christian organizations, global missions, or even Christian colleges. But giving isn’t only about money.

Your tithe can also be expressed through your time, skills, energy, and resources. When you remember that everything you have ultimately belongs to the Lord, it transforms how you view generosity. Giving becomes an act of worship.

Colossians 3:17 says:

“Whatever you do, whether in word or deed, do it all in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father through him.”

Paul reminds us that everything we do should be for the Lord. Therefore, giving a tithe should be a foundational discipline for all Christ-followers. Then, offerings and the giving of our time and talents should overflow from the blessings we’ve received, so that we can make His name known.
