Reading For Sunday | Acts 2:42-47 | Philippians 2:3-8

Devoted | Serve

At Compassion Christian Church, we are laser focused on the mission of leading people to a life-changing relationship with Jesus. As we pursue that mission with passion, intention and enthusiasm, our actions are shaped by what we call our Core 4, or our core values, which can be expressed as follows:

  • We Over Me: We choose the good of the team over personal gain or preference
  • Game Changer: We are able and willing to do whatever it takes to advance the Kingdom. It doesn’t matter if it’s “not our job.”
  • Roof Wrecker: If we have to tear the roof off a building to get our friend to Jesus, we will!
  • E4: We know that raising others up to do a task is the ultimate goal, not just doing a task.

It doesn’t take long to realize that SERVING OTHERS is a common component linking together each of those core values. In fact, serving others has been a foundational principle for God’s Kingdom since Jesus ushered it in and began inviting people to become part of it.

Throughout the Devoted series this Fall, we have been drawing inspiration from Luke’s description of the core practices of the earliest church found in Acts 2:42-47. As the apostles, empowered by the Holy Spirit, began the arduous task of providing structure and leadership to the rapidly growing church, they began to do what they had witnessed Jesus do for them and for others throughout his earthly ministry, embodying love in all its varied facets to those with whom he interacted. For Jesus, to lead was to serve, and to serve was to love authentically and sacrificially.

As we prepare for the week ahead, you are encouraged to read the passages above and meditate on God’s invitation to you today. Paul encouraged the Philippians and encourages us today to have the same mind among us as Jesus, a mind that valued obedience and service to others above position and privilege.

This week we will spend each day focusing on a specific spiritual temperament and how Jesus embodied that temperament in the service of others. Jesus was the perfect blend of personality types, engagement styles and spiritual temperament. It should not surprise us to find examples of each in the accounts of the gospel writers. Be reminded that you most likely have a natural way of relating to God (or a ‘downstream temperament’) and several that feel more unnatural (or ‘upstream temperaments’). Enjoy interacting with each of them with the Lord in the days ahead. You may be surprised by where He invites you to engage more deeply.
