GETTING BOSSY WITH YOUR SOUL

WEDNESDAY, JULY 9
READING: PSALM 42:6-11
The words of Psalm 42 sound eerily similar to the words from Habakkuk that we have been marinating in over the past month. Where are you God? Are you listening? Do you see what I am facing? Do you hear the discouraging words that I am being bombarded with every day?
Have you been there? Have you navigated a season when despite your best efforts and noble intentions, life’s challenges seem overwhelming and insurmountable? The words of Psalm 42 are honest and real. We can very easily find ourselves in a season where we feel downcast and depressed at a soul level.
Katherine Wolf writes in the book, Suffer Strong, co-authored with her husband, Jay, about the process she has gone through with God as she navigates life after a debilitating brain stem stroke at the age of 26. Life would never be as they dreamed it to be. Katherine writes that she has found that in seasons of deep discouragement when her best efforts seem to always fall short that she has to get bossy with her soul.
Hope can be restored within us by reminding ourselves the story of where our true hope comes from. Hope is not generated by our talents and abilities. Hope is not secured by our persistent effort or faultless execution. Hope is discovered in the story of God’s faithful, tireless, pursuing love for us.
Tell your soul to hope in God in your best and most bossy tone.

REFLECTION
When darkness veils His lovely face
I rest on His unchanging grace
In every high and stormy gale
My anchor holds within the veil
I rest on His unchanging grace
In every high and stormy gale
My anchor holds within the veil
