FIRST WOE | EXTORTION OF THE VULNERABLE

MONDAY, JUNE 23
READING: HABAKKUK 2:2-20
Every day, it seems we hear news of prominent figures who have extorted money through scams, poor investments, or mismanagement. This is heartbreaking, especially when it targets the most vulnerable in our society. What's even more disheartening is that this isn't a new phenomenon. The Bible speaks of extortion and the plundering of the weak to enrich kings. God Himself agrees with Habakkuk that this is precisely what the Babylonians are doing, and it will not go unpunished. This is the first of five "woes," or judgments, that God addresses. He will not tolerate those who amass wealth by extorting and plundering others. His plan will unfold in due time, and they will ultimately face the consequences of their actions.
JOURNALING QUESTIONS
- While you might not be extorting money, it is important to remember that all of our resources come from the Lord. They are His, and He has simply called us to steward them wisely. With this in mind, how are you using your money and resources? Are you generous with your expenses when you see someone in need? Do you give your time to others generously and without complaint?
- Where does the Lord need to stretch and grow you in your generosity toward others? What is one way you could respond in obedience this week?
