EVEN WHEN IT IS PAINFUL AND MAKES NO SENSE

READING: HABAKKUK 1:1 - 2:1
Let's recap: Habakkuk is writing in the midst of chaos and destruction, lamenting to the Lord about how this can happen under His watch. God answers first with a command, “watch and wait," and follows with an outline of His plans for the Babylonians to take over. Even when He knows they are a cruel and corrupt nation, His perfect justice will still come to pass at the right time. Habakkuk acknowledges that God is faithful, even though the plan does not make sense to him and he still has unanswered questions. In the midst of those uncertainties, Habakkuk proclaims that he will follow God by “waiting and watching” for what He will do. It is not that Habakkuk has everything figured out; we will see more dialogue between them as he asks more tough questions. It is a journey and process of trusting that God is faithful and walking in that knowledge, even when it is painful and does not make sense in our circumstances.
JOURNALING QUESTIONS
- Where in your life do things not make sense right now? Can you see God moving in that situation? If you can, praise Him for what He’s already doing. If you can’t, ask Him to reveal Himself to you.
- Where do you see injustice in the world around you? What can you do that demonstrates God’s love, justice and mercy in the midst of that injustice? If you’re not sure, pray that He will reveal to you what you can do, and then act on it.
- Where have you been the cause of injustice? If you’re not sure, ask God to search your heart and reveal anything unseen to you. If something comes to mind, ask the Lord to forgive you, and seek forgiveness from those you may have harmed.
