REPENT

THURSDAY, MAY 29

The rise of social media platforms like Instagram and TikTok have created platforms for ‘influencers’ who create content to share advice and recommend favorite products and places. Have you ever purchased a product, tried out a new habit or made a decision based upon the advice of someone you follow on social media? If so, you are not alone. Social influence has been happening for thousands of years. The platforms may have changed, but the motivations and tactics remain the same.

As Paul writes to the followers of Jesus in Colosse, he has become aware that there are certain influencers among them who are teaching spiritual advice about how their life with God ‘should’ look. Eugene Peterson translates Paul’s words as follows, “So, then, if with Christ you’ve put all that puffed-up and childish religion behind you, why do you let yourselves be bullied by it?” (vs 20).

It can be overwhelming — even with the most pure intentions — to navigate all the advice available on how to grow closer to God. Between YouTube, podcasts, book recommendations, sermons and even blogs like this one, you can wear yourself out trying to get it ‘right’ just because someone you respect recommends a spiritual practice. Consider this —

  • When and where do you feel most in tune with the Spirit of God?
  • Have you ever been disappointed after trying to read a book, take part in a Bible study, or a ministry opportunity because someone told you how impactful it had been for them?
  • How has God met you in that disappointment?

EXAMEN PRACTICE | Retreat | Replay | Rejoice | Repent

Retreat - Find a quiet spot to spend the next few minutes with God, an influencer whose invitations and intentions you can always trust! Ask Him to help you replay the past 24 hrs drawing your attention to places where He has been working in and through you.

Replay - Allow the Holy Spirit to remind you of key moments in your day. What moments or conversations or occurrences seem to be sticking out prominently in your memory. What made you happy? Did anything cause you anxiety? Notice the things that the Holy Spirit brings to memory.

Rejoice - Celebrate with God in prayer for the things that brought you joy and moments where you felt drawn closer to Him.

REPENT - Speak with the Lord about any moments in your day where you acted out of a love of self. Were there interactions where you felt like withdrawing or hiding? Did any moments in your day seem to drain your energy? Speak with God about those ‘low points’ in your day.

Close your time of reflection by thanking God for His constant presence with you and His abundant grace and mercy purchased through Jesus. Allow Him to enfold you in His perfect love.

And that will be enough for today!
