DAVID, A KING AFTER GOD'S HEART

FRIDAY, APRIL 25

READING: 2 SAMUEL 7:8-16 | Revelation 19:16

ALL HAIL KING JESUS

The Israelites weren’t meant to have a king.  They were supposed to be set apart, to look differently from the nations around them.  But like us, the Israelites were tempted to settle because they didn’t see God’s view of things and instead longed for the lesser things that other people had.

God is a gracious God though, and he did give them what they wanted and even blessed it with someone like David.  He is even promised that his throne will be established forever.  How is that possible? In Acts 2 we are told that though David is dead and buried, this promise still holds true because of Jesus.

The Israelites were never meant to have a king because they already had a King.  God the Father sat upon the throne before David ever did, and he is still enthroned today.  This is in fact what made David a great king, he knew that his throne was not the ultimate throne.

The promise has been fulfilled in that Jesus now sits upon the throne of Heaven.  Our ultimate King reigns and will come again.  Famous missionary Lesslie Newbegin says it like this, “We are required to bide the Father’s time.  We do not establish his Kingdom; it is quite simply, his rule.” The question is do you treat him like a King? Are you trying to establish his kingdom or do you trust him to rule?
